What is Ptosis Surgery?
Ptosis Surgery, also known as Droopy Eyelid Repair, is a specialised surgical procedure that targets the muscles responsible for lifting the eyelid.

What are the non-surgical alternatives to Ptosis Surgery?
Occasionally, patients with eyelid trauma or a myopathic cause of ptosis may benefit from ptosis props, crutch spectacles or a scleral contact lens. Patients with a mild (1 mm) ptosis can benefit from topical prescription eye drops (Upneeq). Some patients may also benefit from a neurotoxin injection to temporarily improve the eyelid ptosis.
What are the risks and complications of Ptosis Surgery?
The risks include: Infection (very rare, can be treated with antibiotics), scarring (generally hidden in skin fold, becomes almost invisible after 6-12 weeks), large bruise or haematoma (minimised by ice packs and avoiding heavy exercise), and theoretical risk to vision (extremely rare). Most complications are minor and treatable.
How long does recovery take after Ptosis Surgery?
Recovery times are generally quick, with most patients achieving complete recovery within 14 days. You may experience some swelling and bruising initially, but this subsides quickly with proper post-operative care, including regular ice pack application.
Is Ptosis Surgery performed under general or local anaesthesia?
In adults, most Ptosis Surgery is performed under local anaesthesia with or without sedation. All Ptosis Surgery in children is performed under general anaesthesia for their comfort and safety.
How long does Ptosis Surgery take?
Depending upon the cause of ptosis, surgery can range from a simple 30-minute procedure to a more complicated 90-minute procedure. The duration depends on the complexity of your individual case and the technique used.
Will there be visible scarring after Ptosis Surgery?
Ptosis surgery can be scarless or leave a scar, depending on your concern. Sometimes the cut is made inside the eyelid (scarless), and other times it is placed in the natural skin fold, where it stays hidden. During your consultation, we will check which option is best for you. In most cases, scars fade and become barely noticeable within 6-12 weeks.
Can ptosis affect children differently?
Yes, ptosis in a child can affect visual development and lead to amblyopia (lazy eye). It's important to address ptosis in children early to prevent long-term visual development issues. All paediatric ptosis surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.
What causes ptosis?
Ptosis can be caused by hereditary abnormal muscle development in childhood or as a result of stretching of the muscle and tendon, which can occur with age. Other causes include eyelid trauma or myopathic conditions affecting eye movement.
